Voice of the Voiceless
Forty-seven writers. Not one name. Everything they were never supposed to say.
It began with a single social-media post: an invitation to women to write about the things that had long disturbed them. What came back was a flood. Forty-five women and two writers from the queer community answered, anonymously, with testimony of the kind families are built to bury: child sexual abuse, marital rape, sexual exploitation, caste oppression, transphobia.
Collected and edited by Nivedita Louis, these essays do in Tamil what the Me Too movement did across the world. They name the failure of the family as a shelter, and the patriarchy that has taught survivors silence for generations.
The book closes in conversation with the feminist writer V. Geetha, who traces how Tamil Nadu’s women’s movement crossed social divides to shape law and policy on women’s safety, and how far that work has carried.
