About

A historian who goes to the field, and comes back with names

Nivedita Louis, smiling, with a yellow flower in her hair, beside water

Nivedita Louis left a secure career in Central Government service to do, full-time, what she had always done in its margins: listen to the past. She writes social and feminist history, archaeology, anthropology and ethnography, and her subject, again and again, is the people official history passed over: pioneering women, Dalit Christians, the working streets of North Chennai.

Her writing began on social media and in magazines. A post caught the eye of the editor of Kungumam Thozhi; her column Muthal Pengal ran in Aval Vikatan before it became a book. Sixteen books have followed, among them Vada Chennai, winner of the SRM Tamizh Perayam’s Puthumaipithan award, and Adhichanallur Muthal Keezhadi Varai, now prescribed for Tamil undergraduates at the Universities of Madras and Calicut. In 2025 came her first novel, Whistle.

She is as much at home in the field as on the page. She leads heritage walks and rides through the subaltern suburbs of Chennai, lectures on history, and coordinates lecture-demonstrations on subaltern music and literature. She identified two Chola-period inscriptions at Poonamallee. She curated the Iyal Isai Museum and the Madras Day exhibitions at the Government Museum, Chennai, created content for the Madras Museum app, and served as storyline curator of the Porunai Museum.

With the Her Stories Foundation, which she co-founded, she has helped bring more than 250 books by women into print, from first-time writers and established names alike, and built in herstories.xyz a home for women’s writing online. She is passionate about feminist rights, and writes, always, for the marginalised and the oppressed.
