Whistle
விசில்
A girl who loved numbers. An office that did not love her back. And a fraud too vast to keep quiet about.
She arrives with a head full of figures and a lower-middle-class household’s hopes upon her shoulders, and is handed the smallest desk the public sector has to offer: a clerk’s. Whistle follows her into the long corridors of the Indian Railways, the country’s largest employer, where a young woman’s laughter is read as provocation and her competence as presumption.
The workers’ union becomes her school, and solidarity her spine. Then, buried in the ledgers, she finds a scam of staggering size and does what every institution dreads: she speaks. Her identity is exposed, and what follows is the long price of conscience, paid out in hardship after hardship.
Written by an author who herself left a Central Government career for the page, Whistle is autofiction in the truest sense of “the personal is political.” It is at once a history of trade-union life, an indictment of everyday misogyny in public institutions, and a tender account of the work-life struggle, told for the thousands of women whose working days have never before found their way into literature.
